Today, Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of an all-video app called IGTV, which is built on Instagram.
Here’s Zuckerberg’s Facebook post:
It’s a big day for Instagram. We’re launching IGTV — a new app designed for watching and creating video on your phone. The experience is native to mobile, with full-screen vertical videos, and the videos can be longer, not just short clips. It’s built on Instagram, so you’re already connected with your friends and favorite Instagram stars from the start. We also announced today that Instagram has reached 1 billion people. There are few products this widely used — congrats Kevin, team, and the whole community who use Instagram every day to inspire, educate and entertain each other. I’m excited to see the new ways all of you will use IGTV.
So, what is IGTV?
IGTV is basically a video-only version of Instagram video stories, similar to Doujin app from China in some ways. It seems to be an early version, so there isn’t enough personalized content. However, it’s inevitable that a lot of viral content would get uploaded in a matter of days and it’ll become a highly addictive app. Doujin had to put an anti-addiction notification in their app, it won’t be surprising to see IGTV needing something similar soon.
It’s a great move by Facebook, which is lagging when it comes to video only apps. Musically, Bigo LIVE, Live.me, Doujin etc. have already taken lead in the full-screen video apps segment. Facebook should totally launch it’s own version of Musically and Bigo Live too.
You can install IGTV from both iOS and Android Stores: https://instagram-press.com/blog/2018/06/20/welcome-to-igtv/
